7 Tips on Caring for Your EYES
Tip #1 - Have your eyes examined yearly.
The single most important thing you can do to protect your
vision is to get frequent eye exams. Only your eye care
professional is qualified to determine the health of your eyes. If
it's been a year or longer, you're due for a return visit to your
eye doctor.
Tip #2 - Your eyes can feel fine and still be in trouble.
Every year, thousands of people discover that they have
undetected problems developing in their eyes. The fact is that
many diseases of the eye show no symptoms and go untreated
for too long by unsuspecting patients. Only a doctor of
optometry can detect a problem early on when it's easiest to
treat. Why not give yourself the comfort and assurance of
knowing that your eyes are healthy?
Tip #3 - Protect your eyes from UV radiation.
It is now well established that having a few sunburns in your
teens will potentially lead to skin cancer in your 50's. There is
overwhelming evidence that over-exposure of UV radiation
accelerates the aging process of all tissues of the eye. The
development of cataracts as well as the breakdown of the
macula/retina are hastened by exposure to UV radiation. It is
wise to protect yourself with ophthalmic quality sunglasses.
Exposure to UV radiation does not only come from the sun:
there is still question as to whether or not computer radiation is
harmful to eyes. However, it is best to err on the side of the
safety of your vision, so UV400 should be included on your
computer prescription. Obtain GOOD quality sunglasses !
Tip #4 - Protect your eyes from injury, strain and disease.
78% of all eye injuries - over 5,000 every day - occur outside of
work. Even for ordinary household chores you take for granted,
protective eyewear may be necessary. Injuries from these
activities are especially common: painting, yard work, using
hand tools, auto maintenance, woodworking, home crafts and
housework.
You can also help protect your eyes from diseases like cataracts,
and from eye strain associated with computer use.
Tip #5 - Consider the convenience of contact lenses.
While contact lenses take a bit more effort than simply taking
glasses on and off, they offer a number of advantages you may
not have considered. They are perfect for many sports and
occupations, and can also be safer. They don't steam up or slide
down the nose in humid or hot conditions. They provide a
broader, unobstructed field of vision. And of course, many
people enjoy wearing the new colored lenses that change the
color of your eyes! Most importantly, however, your doctor
must determine whether you are a good candidate for contact
lenses, and what type of lens is best for you - daily or extended
wear, rigid gas-permeable, or soft are some of the possibilities.
Then they must be carefully fitted to your eye to be
comfortable.
1 Day Contacts open opportunities for occasional wear for
dress, social, or sports.
Tip #6 - The eyes are the window to overall health.
An eye exam is going to tell you more about your health and
well-being than you may imagine. By using the proper
instruments, your eye doctor can detect evidence of high blood
pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and other
diseases. Because there is little pain associated with eye
problems, it is important to detect any concerns in the early
stages when they can be treated most effectively. Of course,
your general eye health will also be evaluated, and your
prescription checked for any changes in strength.
Tip #7 - There's a lot you can change, so find out.
In one simple visit to your eye doctor, you may be able to
considerable increase your physical comfort and solve problems
you may not have known were eye-related. Perhaps you can
ease the eyestrain of night driving, protect your eyes from the
risk of cataracts, ease the weight or distortion of thick lenses, or
improve your child's study habits. You can even make yourself
feel and look a lot better with the recent improvements in lens
materials, lens designs and contact lens choices. So take
advantage of the newest developments in eye care- just ask your
doctor.
As an added tip – When
washing face, shaving, showering: take a wash cloth with baby shampoo with eyes
closed, rub your eye lashes. This will clean away the extra oils that can feed
bacteria and cause more infections and red eyes.
