Here are some links of why it is SO important to where sunglasses:
There was a lot of controversy over the effects of ultraviolet light. Some have the opinion that now is the time for prevention against poor sight later in life, while others take a very lackadaisical attitude. There was controversy over whether the center of the solar system was the sun; whether the earth was round; and the necessity of vitamin therapy. The effects of light radiation will no doubt be assessed for many years to come.
It is now well established that having a few sunburns in your teens will potentially lead to skin cancer in our 50′s. This same type of exposure to your eyes contributes and accelerates the break down of your eye tissues.
There is overwhelming evidence that overexposure of UV radiation accelerates the aging process of ALL tissues of the eye. It also appears that there are minimum and maximum ranges for health, like food, water, oxygen.
In 1900 the average life expectancy for humans was 50 years of age. Cataracts tend to develop at age 65, so no problems appeared then. However, studies are showing that cataracts are developing at earlier ages of those with over exposure to ultraviolet light. Now the life expectancy is over 77 and cataracts are definitely one of those things that we have learned to live with and overcome, because the techniques for cataract surgery have evolved to be very sophisticated and successful. On the other hand, the Macula/Retina (the seeing part of your eye) tends to break down in the mid 70′s, and there is no real treatment or cure. If this condition is accelerated by only a few years due to harmful overexposure to radiation, the last years could be visually devastating. These effects are like skin cancer that develops several decades after overexposure to the sun, so protect yourself now!!! The ozone layer is decreasing, therefore decreasing the earth’s own UV filter, so each day you get more and more exposure!!!
Being around and working with computers are also in question with the amount of radiation and its effects upon humans. Just like 40 years ago when cigarette smoking was not a health issue, today the government has made a significant turn around in their position on cigarette smoking. Dr. Baron points out that the same events may occur with computer radiation – the verdict is still out!!! So include UV400 in your computer prescription.
It is our opinion that if we are to err, we should err on the side of safety. So it is wise to protect yourself with ophthalmic quality sunglasses from overexposure to all wavelengths, especially ultraviolet and including infra red, this is most important if you spend time outdoors where it is sunny, windy, and at high altitudes (like Colorado).
Even the news now gives a UV Rating; you will notice that Colorado is always high!!!
In 1994, finally, the American Optometric Association, the American Medical Association, the American Ophthalogical Society, and the Society for the Prevention of Blindness all agreed that Ultra Violet light can be harmful to your eyes and sight.
